Several years ago, before I bought the 3-point TrackIR headset clip, I used a 3-point clip that I made with some wires, a coat hanger, infrared LEDs, some folder clips, a 9-volt battery, and a soldering gun, but my work was hasty and sloppy, and it did not last.

My only complaint is that these days, the 3rd party driver for the PS3 Eye camera, called CLEye, costs $2 to download (it used to be free). I used OT along with a modified PS3 Eye camera (take it apart and remove the IR filter and replace it with a piece of undeveloped film negative, 5-minute job) and a 3-point TrackIR headset clip. I used Open Track with Elite: Dangerous, but haven't bothered to set it up with SC yet. I bought mine off ebay which had an image clearly showing the rounded lens. The difference is subtle and not advertised.

Below is a link which can help distinguish between the cameras versions. Some versions have a very strong IR filter that can not be removed. But not every version of the PS3 webcam can be used. It is the only one that I know of that can track at 120FPS. The PS3 webcam is one of the better performing cameras. A layer or two of film from a floppy disk works quite well. You also then need a visible light filter, which will block visible light but allow IR to pass. Some webcams have a very weak filter and can be left in, but most need to be removed (like with the xbox 360 and PS3 webcams). Most webcams have an IRfilter that needs to be removed. Be sure to check out the information over on to build the tracker and modify an appropriate webcam.
